0-0 a win?
The YYSC Soccer Season is in full swing, the
English Premier League, the Spanish La Liga, the
Italian Serie A and many more professional
leagues are giving us the best entertainment on
this planet – Soccer at its best!
Whatever your feeling about the game is, it is
the world’s most played game – kids of all ages,
ethnic background, religious beliefs, rich or
poor, girls or boys can all play this game with
only one piece of equipment – a ball.
Today’s kids have so many options, activities
and opportunities so the time spent on the
soccer pitch together with their friends is
limited to organized practices and games. But
nevertheless if they get to experience the
thrill of finding out first hand that - “it
isn’t necessarily the team with the best players
that win all the time – it is the team that play
the best that day that wins” – then the
hours spent with your best friend – your soccer
ball – and your next best friend – your
teammates – will instill the values of always
doing your best, supporting each other,
accepting your role, celebrating the success of
your teammates, respecting your coaches, parents
and other role models that are there when you
need them - ALL for the better of the team.
Yorktown Hawks, played their first game of the
season the other week in a very entertaining and
exciting 0-0 tie and it was celebrated by us
like if we won the game – not because we felt we
were inferior but because we realized that you
can WIN without actually winning the game –
“it isn’t necessarily winning the game that
define you – it is how you played the game as a
TEAM that define you”…
Let’s agree that the best thing we can do for
our kids and OURSELVES is to teach them that by
helping, honoring, respecting and supporting
each other, be humble in defeat, celebrating a
win and remembering that by doing your best at
all times you will always look like a winner in
sport… and in life…, regardless of the outcome
of the game.
A 0-0 tie can both be entertaining and
considered a win…in soccer AND in life!

Head Coach, Yorktown Hawks
